XL Members travelled through rural Bali to reach an idyllic location carefully selected to become the Matthew Faid Forest. On reaching the site we were rewarded with panoramic views of the green and lush hills and mountains of Bali. We enjoyed planting trees with the local villagers who are the custodians of the trees whilst listening to the local birds and watching a multitude of butterflies. This was a perfect day. |

This year XL has partnered with The Hunger Project to launch the XL Pioneer Club. 64 extraordinary individuals have recently returned from the inaugural Pioneer Club trip to India. The proceeds from this trip are helping train 10,000 women leaders and as a result a measurable 3 million of India’s poor will be supported on their steps out of poverty. Pioneer Club members travelled to India in January on a twelve day transformational journey, connecting with others in an extraordinary setting and seeing the tangible results of their giving. The XL Pioneer Club programme was announced by Roger Hamilton at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York in September. The journey to India coincided with the 60th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. |

Self Reliance For Zambia (SRFZ) decided to fill a 40ft sea container on 070707. Many XL life members helped by being there on the day or giving donations of clothes, books, saucepans even an old cement mixer. Every item was itemized, before packing and loading. It wasn't all about work, Cliff Whiting brought his moto-cross bike to the event and some members could be seen disappearing into the distance in a trail of dust. They did eventually come back! The member's children got tractor driving lessons from SRFZ volunteers and there was a BBQ as well. Whilst the container wasn't completely filled because the tractors have to dismantled and steam cleaned, the clothes, the hospital beds, kitchen tiles and many other items are already packed or ready to be loaded in their transportation cages, a gift from Coca-Cola! The next step is to move the containers the 12,000+ km to Northern Zambia so that the agricultural college, school and hospital can be established on the land given to SRFZ by the local authorities. |

Our Life Members in Jakarta in collaboration with The Plant-A-Tree-Today (PATT) Foundation has just finished its latest project supporting tree planting in Bogor which is an hour from Jakarta, Indonesia. The site for planting was originally a mountainside which had been degraded by deforestation and subsequent landslide. The area was covered primarily with scrub, banana trees and tapicoa plants used by the local populace. This project was in cooperation with the local villagers and the orphanage to provided an income via site preparation, and subsequent care of the planted trees. The best part was it was a family event with many participants being less than 10 years old. Everybody was very enthusiastic and eager to plant as many trees as possible. They had been there a day earlier camping near the site with a lot of interactive discussion on climate change and global warming - and how each of us could help. |
